Tour Itinerary
Insider story
At Carmo Square, hear how Portugal’s revolution got its flower. Celeste was carrying carnations home when she offered them to soldiers in the streets. With nowhere else to put them, they slipped the flowers into their rifle barrels—creating the unforgettable symbol of the Carnation Revolution.
Restauradores Square
Our journey begins at Restauradores, a square dedicated to Portugal’s restored independence from Spain in 1640. Surrounded by grand architecture, it is the perfect place to understand Lisbon’s proud, resilient character before we step deeper into the city’s history, legends and dramatic turning points.
São Domingos & the Jewish Memorial
At São Domingos, uncover one of Lisbon’s most powerful and difficult stories. Beside the Jewish Memorial, your guide brings the 1506 massacre to life and explains how fear, intolerance and social tension turned the heart of the city into a scene of tragedy. It is a moving stop that reveals a side of Lisbon many visitors would otherwise pass without noticing.
Rossio & Sebastianism
Begin in Rossio, one of Lisbon’s great meeting places, where history blends with myth. Discover Sebastianism, the uniquely Portuguese belief that the young King Sebastian, lost in battle, would one day return through the morning mist to restore the nation’s greatness—a story of hope, longing and saudade that still echoes in Portuguese culture.
Santa Justa Elevator
Look up at one of Lisbon’s most distinctive landmarks, the neo-Gothic Santa Justa Elevator. Built at the beginning of the 20th century to connect the lower city with Carmo, it transformed an everyday climb into an engineering landmark. Your guide reveals how Lisbon adapted its steep hills long before escalators and modern transport.
Carmo Convent
Climb to Carmo and stand beneath the open sky of one of Lisbon’s most haunting monuments. The Gothic convent was left in ruins after the 1755 earthquake, its arches still framing the sky today. Here, stories of medieval Portugal, destruction and revolution overlap—and even a popular Portuguese expression preserves the memory of the day Carmo came crashing down.
Chiado
Hear how one morning changed Lisbon forever. The 1755 earthquake was followed by fire and a devastating tsunami, destroying much of the city and forcing Portugal to rethink how a capital should be built. Your guide connects the catastrophe to the rise of the Marquis of Pombal and the ordered streets of Baixa you still walk through today.
Praça do Comércio
At Praça do Comércio, relive the peaceful revolution that ended Portugal’s dictatorship on 25 April 1974. Hear how civilians filled the streets despite warnings to stay home and how carnations placed in soldiers’ rifle barrels became the unforgettable symbol of the day. From this historic square, discover how the Carnation Revolution transformed Portugal and brought decades of dictatorship to an end.
