Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour

Because this isn’t just a tour—it’s my family’s daily life. Walk through my grandfather’s hidden plots, hear stories no guidebook tells, and taste spices like a local. You’ll leave with spice-dusted hands and a full heart.

Our Tour Guide
What makes your tour different?
Unlike other spice tours, you’ll be guided by local farmers who live on this land. Touch, smell and taste every spice, then enjoy tropical fruits prepared fresh before your eyes. This is more than a tour—it’s a feast for all the senses.
Overview
From the moment we meet, this stops being a tour; it becomes our family's story beneath the spice trees. We wander through groves where our grandparents planted clove and cinnamon, each tree holding a memory.
You'll crush bark that perfumed our wedding feasts, snap vanilla pods that paid for school fees, and taste cardamom brighter than any jar. Between discoveries, we prepare tropical fruits before your eyes—jackfruit, passion fruit, coconut, shokishoki—just as our grandparents taught us, sharing stories of harvest seasons and celebration feasts.
Tour Itinerary
Insider story
One of the most memorable moments on the Spice Tour is when your guide introduces you to the "lipstick tree," also known as achiote or annatto. They won’t just describe it; they’ll crush the red seeds to create a natural body paint, and you’ll see how this spice has been used for generations.
Welcome and Briefing
Arrive at the entrance of Shabuta Spice Farm. Your guide will welcome you, give a safety briefing, explain the farm layout, and provide a quick overview of Zanzibar's spice heritage.
Clove and Cinnamon Section
See clove trees and cinnamon bushes, watch a peeling demonstration, smell and taste both spices, and learn about the drying process.
Nutmeg and Mace Station
Find nutmeg fruit on the tree. Your guide splits it open to reveal the red mace layer. Here, you will taste fresh nutmeg and discuss its medicinal uses.
Pepper Vine and Vanilla Orchid Area
View black pepper vines and vanilla orchids, taste raw peppercorns and fresh vanilla bean paste, and learn about pollination and curing methods.
Ginger, Turmeric, and Cardamom Patch
Dig up fresh ginger and turmeric roots, taste raw slices, and smell crushed cardamom pods. See lemongrass and other aromatic plants as well.
Coconut Climbing Demonstration and Tasting
The guide climbs a coconut tree and sings. Afterwards, taste fresh coconut water and grated coconut, and learn how locals use coconut in their daily lives.
On-Farm Spice Stall and Wrap-Up
Walk to the farm's spice sales stand, browse packaged spices, oils, and soaps with no pressure to buy, and say farewell.
