Free Tour of Coptic Cairo: Churches & History

We will start at the entrance to the Coptic Quarter with a historical introduction to this area and its importance in Egypt’s history. We will learn about the origins of Christianity in the country, its arrival in Egypt, and the development of the Coptic community over the centuries. We will also explain how this quarter became a major religious and cultural center, setting the stage to discover its churches, monuments, and traditions.

We will stop in front of the historic Babylon Fortress, one of the oldest structures in this area and a key site for understanding the evolution of the Coptic Quarter. We will learn about its strategic importance in Roman times and how, over the centuries, the surrounding area became an important religious center. We will also see the remains of its ancient walls and hear some of the stories linked to this place.

We will visit the famous Hanging Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary and considered one of the most important Coptic churches in Cairo. We will learn the origin of its curious name and discover how it was built over one of the ancient towers of Babylon Fortress. During the visit, we will focus on its architecture, icons, and decorative elements while learning about the traditions and stories connected to this place.

We will visit the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, also known as **the Cave Church**, one of the most emblematic places in the Coptic Quarter. According to Coptic tradition, this site is linked to the stay of the Holy Family during their journey through Egypt. We will go down to see the crypt beneath the church and talk about the ancient traditions surrounding this space. We will also discover its history.

We will visit the Ben Ezra Synagogue, one of the most important historical sites in the Coptic Quarter and a testimony to the presence of the Jewish community in Egypt. We will learn about the history of this ancient temple and the tradition linking it to the place where, according to belief, Moses was found as a baby. We will also talk about the Jewish community that lived in Cairo for centuries and the famous **Cairo Geniza**.

We will visit the Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque, considered the first mosque built in Egypt and one of the key places for understanding the origins of Islamic Cairo. We will learn about the history of Amr Ibn Al-As and the arrival of Islam in Egypt in the 7th century, and discover how this site was expanded and transformed over the centuries. During the visit, we will observe its large courtyard and its architecture.
