We’ll discover why Al-Muizz Street was one of medieval Cairo’s main arteries: a meeting place for merchants, artisans, travelers and locals. We’ll also notice architectural details that reveal the district’s history and daily life.

Meeting at BAB AL FUTUH

We will begin in front of Bab Al-Futuh, one of the three great gates still preserved from Cairo’s ancient walls. Here we will learn about the origins of the historic city and how these impressive fortifications protected medieval Cairo. It is the perfect starting point to enter Al-Muizz Street and discover the history, architecture and traditions of Islamic Cairo.

AL HAKIM MOSQUE

We will stop in front of Al-Hakim Mosque, one of the most notable monuments on Al-Muizz Street and a fine example of Fatimid architecture. We will learn about Caliph Al-Hakim, the context of its construction, and its walls and minarets. A stop to understand the importance of the Fatimid era in Cairo’s history.

Sultan Qalawun Complex – Mosque and Madrasa

We will stop in front of the impressive Sultan Qalawun Complex, one of the great monumental ensembles of Al-Muizz Street. During the exterior visit, we will learn about Sultan Qalawun and the importance of its religious and educational spaces in medieval Cairo. We will admire its magnificent façade and architectural details, along with stories and curiosities about this emblematic monument.

Walk along Al-Muizz Street and its mosques
