Overview
Explore Rome with an archaeologist and tour guide. See and understand the city through the eyes of a Roman. Step into history, feel like a citizen of Rome 2,000 years ago, and discover the ancient world they lived in.
We begin at the Circus Maximus, the largest entertainment venue of the ancient world and the setting for the Romans’ favorite sport. As we walk, we will find medieval and Baroque churches built over Roman structures, while exploring a neighborhood away from mass tourism that still preserves its own identity. You will see two great ancient arches and a Byzantine church. We will pass along the other side of the Roman Forum, where you will notice how, within just 20 meters, completely different eras coexist in Rome.
Tour Itinerary
Insider story
King Servius Tullius will introduce us to his sacred wife, a goddess. The emperors will lead us through their triumphal processions beneath Jupiter’s temple. Constantine will show us his lesser-known arch, and Romulus the she-wolf legend and Rome’s founding.
Meet at Piazza Sant'Anastasia
Introduction to Rome's history: we'll talk about the twins and the city's foundation, what came before and after Romulus. We'll get to know the Circus Maximus and see a church linked to that great monument.
The Velabrum
We'll explore the ancient Velabrum, the valley where the shepherd Faustulus found the twins Romulus and Remus with the she-wolf. We'll discuss legends and history, welcomed here by two Roman arches and a medieval church.
Vicus Tuscus and San Teodoro
A walk at the foot of the Palatine, the hill where Romulus founded the city and where the emperors lived. We'll discover what Rome became after its fall, especially its Byzantine period: the Greek church of San Teodoro.
The Roman Forum from another perspective
We'll leave behind the chaos of Via dei Fori Imperiali to view the Roman Forum away from the usual tourist routes. From the outside, we'll discover the temples, buildings, and this great square, the political and economic heart of the Urbs.
Tarpeian Rock and Capitoline Hill
Dark legends blend with history on Capitoline Hill, the religious center of antiquity. Here stood Rome's most important temple, and here atrocious crimes were committed.
The Theatre of Marcellus
We'll end our route with views over the Theatre of Marcellus, the temple of Apollo and Bellona, and the sacred buildings of Minerva and Hercules. We'll be at the foot of the Capitoline and beside one of central Rome's major roads. Finally, we'll return to the city's chaos and murmurs.
